T.I.G. Welding of aluminum and steel and Mig welding of aluminum.

Classes will balance theory with hands on practice. Our goal is to help you develop proficiency with the tools of metalwork in the most concise and effective way possible. We emphasize hands-on practice. Most classes are at least 50% hands on.

In this class we will cover:

  • Tungsten inert gas welding theory and practice, practice, practice.
  • The advantages and disadvantages of T.I.G, when to select and when to avoid using the process.
  • How to evaluate and get hold of the machinery.
  • How to set up a machine. AC versus DC (dcen) understanding the many knobs and buttons.
  • Where is the tungsten?, What did I do to this tungsten? Are you my Tungsten?
  • Tungsten types and uses.
  • Recognizing tungsten contamination.
  • Fusion welding of carbon steels.
  • Lap and butt welding of steel with filler.
  • Electrode manipulation.
  • Good body mechanics.
  • Aluminum and the 30 minute complaint.
  • Aluminum, the mostly bad and a little good news.
  • We will discuss and weld aluminum, this is not the sole focus of the class, if TIG welding of aluminum is you goal please plan on taking additional coursework with us, it is a broad a subject and requires significant practice.  We have practice sessions available on every Thursday from 4:30 till 8:30 for the next several months.
  • Tig Brazing will be discussed and demonstrated.
  • We do not allow clients to bring project work into this class, we cannot reasonably (for example) repair a broken motorcycle frame while delivering a cogent lecture and answering questions, nor can we reasonably expect clients to produce viable (critical fail resistant)  results in their first experience with the equipment. Yes, we get asked this kind of thing frequently (I know right?).
  • We will spend this session running welds without having a specific project outcome.
  • We currently have 4 tig machines, two are water cooled, 300 plus amp machines,  two are air cooled 180 amp machines.
  • We will demonstrate the uses of a MIG “Spool gun” on a Miller 215. This is a very useful process for working with thicker pieces and larger volumes of aluminum work.

We provide all equipment required. We provide materials for curriculum based projects. The class does not support individual project work. It is impossible to support individual project work while simultaneously  teaching curriculum.

Minors 16 y.o. and up may attend.

This is a short, very information dense class. You should plan on continuing to hone your skills and review the theory in our practice session, or repeating the class. Our small class size allows us to cater work with students that are at various levels of expertise simultaneously.

This class is taught at Hazardfactory, a 3000 sq ft working industrial arts studio in south Seattle. We are firmly committed to offering the highest quality instruction of this type. We offer a safe, actively supportive, ism-free  working environment. We think of ourselves as occasionally funny.
