Erics' Welding for Mechanics Sat Sept 2, 1:30-5:00 and Sat Sept 9 1:30-5:00pm

This is a two part class, Sept 2nd and Sept 9th.  

We provide all required equipment, helmets, gloves and jackets. We provide all equipment and consumables. 

We ask that clients wear work shoes with leather or canvas uppers and jeans or cotton full length pants.

This curriculum has been developed specifically for your needs as an auto mechanic.

We will begin by discussing welding safety and move quickly into identifying the types and capabilities of various pieces of equipment, Mig, (gmaw) Tig (GTAW) and Stick (SMAW).

We will show you how to tack weld in a variety of positions. 1g, 1f, 2f etc. 

This exercise will get you familiar with the arc, and the process, and allow us to demonstrate how voltage and wire feed affect your results.

We will begin welding with GMAW and run through a variety of weld positions using 16 guage hot rolled steel. 

You will learn a variety of manipulations, fore-hand, back-hand, back step, stringers and several weaves. Each has fairly specific applications that relate to material thickness and position. 

The bulk of the class will be spent with GMAW on 16 guage. 

We will introduce techniques for working with 18 guage steel, which is the thickness used in auto body work. 

We will show you how to operate a hand held plasma cutter and how to operate an angle grinder for cut-off work and grinding.  This will conclude the Sept 2nd session. 

We allow plenty of time for questions, the vast bulk of this class will be hands-on and hood down. 

On Sept 9th we will test 16 gauge samples destructively. This will help you appreciate the strength of the work you have generated. 

We will show you how to maintain welding equipment and identify and fix welding equipment problems.

 You will learn how to load electrode into the machine and ensure it is feeding smoothly, this is absolutely critical to know if you want to produce good results. 

Flux core welding and Stick welding provide distinct advantages when welding thicker materials. We will demonstrate these techniques.

The bulk of this class will be spent hands on. We will have time to answer questions and demonstrate soultions to some of the trickier problems encountered in welding in and around cars and heavy equipment.
